Japan’s whalers are in the Southern Ocean at present, where each year they kill up to 1,000 whales under a so-called scientific whaling programme.

It is not necessary to kill whales to study and understand them. The hunting methods used by the whalers are cruel, outdated and completely contradictory to current international guidelines for the humane slaughter of animals.

WSPA has scientifically proven evidence that there is no humane way to kill a whale, with some whales taking an hour or even longer to die.
