The Fragile X Association of Australia is a non-profit registered charity to support and provide services to people with Fragile X syndrome and their families. Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited form of intellectual disability, and those suffering from it may also have behavioural problems.
Despite the incidence of the syndrome being widespread there is considerable lack of awareness, resulting in misdiagnoses and misunderstandings. Today, around forty years after Fragile X was first identified, many people remain undiagnosed. Latest statistics indicate 1 in 3600 males and 1 in 4000- 6000 females are affected and that as many as 1 in 130 females are carriers.
Our aim is to help people with Fragile X to realise their full potential, provide information and support to those people whose lives have been affected by Fragile X, promote acceptance and integration of people with Fragile X into the community and to raise public awareness of Fragile X Syndrome.
Examples of the support we provide to our members are specialised Fragile X multi-disciplinary clinics to assist persons with Fragile X Syndrome and family support phone numbers and quarterly newsletters.
