The Banish the Black Dog Charity Bike Ride is a relaxed cycling tour promoted by the Rotary Club of Townsville Central to raise awareness of mental health issues in our community, and to raise funds to aid research into the causes and treatments of mental health disorders.

The ride’s major donation recipient is Australian Rotary Health, the largest non-government mental health research funding organization in Australia. We also support local initiatives in the treatment and support of those suffering mental illnesses.

Australian Rotary Health

Australian Rotary Health is one of Australia's largest independent health research funds.

Currently focusing on mental health research, Australian Rotary Health has provided more than $31 million worth of funds to medical research since 1985. Almost $3 million was spent on health based research and education in 2010 alone.

It is the goal of Australian Rotary Health to support healthier minds, bodies and communities through research, awareness and education.

The Rotary Club of Townsville Central had the vision for the club to target mental health issues and support healthier minds, bodies and communities through the Banish the Black Dog Charity Bike Ride.

The inaugural Banish the Black Dog Charity Bike Ride ride was held in 2009 with 85 riders raising over $22,000. Since then the number of riders has grown to 115 and has raised over $180,000 for the research of mental health issues.

We have also provided support for local mental health organisations. In 2013 we hope to boost that total even further.
