The expedition will traverse the Indian Ocean from east to west, from Exmouth, WA to Kenya - a distance of approximately 4,300 nautical miles, or 8,000km.
Weather permitting, the crew will depart from Exmouth on 1 June 2012. Their boat is the 'Sara G' - 11.1 metres long, with a 1.8 metre beam, with forward and rear sleeping cabins and three sculling positions on deck. The crew hail from around the globe, with Tim the sole Australian. Skipper and voyage organiser Matt Craughwell is an experienced ocean rower, having already crossed the Atlantic twice in the 'Sara G'. The expedition will be totally unsupported, with the six man crew having to be completely self-sufficient. Each rower will man the oars for two hours followed by two hours of rest in a continuous shift cycle. At this rate, the aim is to complete the journey in 50-70 days.
In addition to the physical challenge of the voyage, Tim has set himself a goal to raise $250,000 for two charities close to his heart.
Tim's mother suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS) " I have seen how MS can affect someone's life. If I can raise funds to help someone who is living with the disease to achieve a dream or improve their quality of life, I believe that would be an achievement."
As a police officer, Tim is also proud to support the Blue Ribbon Foundation, which provides funding for new and improved emergency facilities in public hospitals, in commemoration of fallen officers.
