Welcome to the Risk Ride supporting Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA)

Where: The Risk Ride supporting SCIA precedes the annual Risk Specialist Network - Risk Retreat Conference. This exciting and challenging ride will start in Perth and finish in Bunker Bay and covers a whooping 620 km's! The course includes a mixture of country lanes through flat farmland (picture racing in Belgium), wooded forests and rolling hills (thankfully none as big as this year although challenging just the same). For the first time we have even included a couple of dirt sections (longest 10km) to round out everyone's off-road skills. Day's end will see weary but satisfied riders cooling off with a swim at nearby beaches.

When: Tuesday 13 March to Saturday 17 March 2012

Who: The Risk Ride supporting SCIA is a group of Risk Specialist financial advisers participating in a challenging and rewarding charity cycling event. The ride will take place over five days and covers a 620 kilometre course that includes a mixture of country lanes through flat farmland, wooded forests and rolling hills. For the first time ever we have included a couple of dirt sections, and day’s end will see weary but satisfied riders cooling off with a swim at nearby beaches.

About Spinal Cord Injuries Australia

Every year, more than 300 people across Australia hear the dreaded words:

“I’m sorry, but you will never walk again”

SCIA has been providing essential services to people who have sustained a spinal cord injury since 1967. SCIA’s services encompass all of life; from hospital to home to workplace. The organisation develops programs to educate and support whilst working to assist in the elimination of barriers that prevent social inclusion for people with a spinal cord injury—ensuring that the society in which we live is fully accessible to everybody.

One of the many programs that SCIA offers is a unique rehabilitation program called ‘Walk On’. The Walk On program involves intensive, dynamic, weight-bearing exercises.  All Walk On exercises are performed out of the wheelchair, either on a large physio table, on mats on the floor or a variety of rehabilitative exercise equipment.  Exercises involve the entire body and are designed to reactivate the nervous system and improve strength and coordination through a series of repetitive movements. The program is delivered by specially trained Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists who work, at a minimum, one on one with a client.

Since its commencement in 2008, many Walk On clients have experienced significant practical and functional improvements which have had a major impact upon their quality of life.
