Feel the buzz of the Great Victorian Bike Ride. This nine day event will strike out through gold country and the Grampians, past wineries and back to historic Ballarat. Challenges await, there are hills to be tackled, and plenty of flat roads too. Experience the exhilaration of achievement, feeling fit and riding steady. ASHBURTON dad Peter Lawther will make sure he carries plenty of sweets when he, his wife and three children embark on the Great Victorian bike ride at the end of November. However the sweets won't be for young Emma 10, nor Adam 12, nor James 14 but for their dad. The 44-year-old found out he has type 1 diabetes earlier this year. The family will travel 590km on their bikes through breath-taking Victorian terrain. "It just seemed the perfect time for us to do the ride with the kids," Mr Lawther said. "Being diagnosed with diabetes just added another dimension." Dubbing themselves 'Team Lawther' the family are actively seeking sponsorship for their ride to raise funds for Diabetes Australia - Vic. Mr Lawther says he wants his children to be aware of diabetes and the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle. "The only good thing about my being diagnosed is the kids have become aware of the disease," Mr Lawther says.
