The Shepherd Centre's Events has now finished

When Bryce's hearing was tested at birth, it wasn't long before his parents were told that Bryce had profound hearing loss. It was completely unexpected and a huge shock.

The family came to The Shepherd Centre soon after Bryce's diagnosis. His mother, Fiona, says that prior to walking through our doors, their lives were full of uncertainty.

Bryce was initially given hearing aids and began attending Auditory-Verbal Therapy lessons at our Roseville centre. It soon became clear that hearing aids alone were not enough to help with Bryce's profound loss so, at just 5 months old, Bryce received bilateral cochlear implants. He continued to receive specialised speech therapy, focusing on listening with the help of his new implants. His parents were also taught the skills to help Bryce listen and communicate at home.

This combination of technology and therapy has had a profound impact on Bryce in a relatively short space of time.

"His progress has been really remarkable. At 14 months, he already has about five words. He says 'mum mum' and 'dad dad'. He says 'Oh no' when he drops things. He had an evaluation after six months and it's amazing to find out that he is up to speed with other hearing children of his age."
