What's the situation today for the Borneo Orangutans?

Orangutans face enormous animal welfare issues. The most important risk factor for orangutans is the loss of habitat and the fragmentation of orangutan forests - a fallout of legal and illegal logging and the growing palm oil industry in Borneo. This displacement poses a number of threats:

  • Injury or death
  • Disease
  • Hunting for their meat and skulls
  • Orphaning of baby orangutans
  • Illegal pet trading

WSPA is supporting the Nyaru Menteng Sanctuary in Borneo which is the world's largest orangutan sanctuary. The sanctuary currently houses more than 650 orangutans that have been rescued either straight from the wild or from illegal captivity. The majority are orphaned babies which require rehabilitation before their re-release into the wild can be considered.

When orangutans arrive at the centre, the main steps in their journey to freedom are medical care and assessment, socialisation, healing and learning. The orphaned orangutans will spend up to six years learning the skills they will need to survive back in the wild - skills they would have learned from their mothers.

So click on 'Build a Hero Page' now and create a miracle by throwing a fundraising event for these beautiful orangutans!
