Hi everyone - thanks for coming here and reading this.
I've never tried to raise money for anything before. I'm not even really sure why I'm doing this. I hope you'll bear with me as I try to explain.
My husband J and I have known Sally for ten years. When her sister Kim became ill with leukaemia we were heartbroken on her behalf, and also on behalf of her parents, even though we don't know them well. We have a daughter of our own and can't begin to imagine their pain. When Kim had her bone marrow transplant and went into remission we were so happy for the whole family - and when she became ill again we ached for them. We tried to be there for Sally if she needed us, but there was little we could do of course.
When Kim died we felt so helpless! How can you even presume to try and comfort parents who've lost a daughter, or a grieving sister? Especially a family like the Lanes who faced the whole ordeal with such dignity and faith?
Still I wanted to do SOMETHING. Something to say, I'm so sorry this happened to you, and I'm glad there were people and organisations around to bring meaning and joy to Kim's last months.
After I entered the Melbourne Marathon it just came to me - I should run it for the Lanes, and try to raise some money for a charity that supported them. So here we are.
I've never run a marathon before. I'm scared (and a bit embarrassed about asking for money) but I hope you'll sponsor me! I'd be happy with even one dollar, or if you're feeling flush, one dollar for each km I run. That'd be...errrrr.... 42! Eeek! Or you could sponsor me for each hour that I run - I'm estimating six!
Thanks again for reading this and in advance for your donations. I'll dig deep and I hope you will too
cheers
Alison
