The Australian Ballet School has a long history; a history that has been defined by a spirit of innovation and the striving for excellence to produce dancers and teachers of the future. Although the needs of our students and teachers change and develop with time, our commitment to delivering very best practice in dance education remains steadfast.

With the School’s values of nurturing, creativity, artistic expression and passion at the fore of what we do, we strive to provide an environment that supports our students’ aspirations when they undertake training at The Australian Ballet School. A holistic approach to our training programme ensures all students have a broad yet comprehensive education; equipping them to pursue vocations, not only in dance and the allied arts, but in areas outside dance. Our students are well-served by our Student Health and Well-being Programme which provides unrivalled access to the very best in psychological, physical conditioning, nutritional and medical care, which is so important to growing minds and bodies.

2016 has been ambitious and exhilarating for The Australian Ballet School and is a testament to the tremendous support we receive from our friends, Patrons, Corporate Partners, The Australian Ballet and the Australian Government. Thank you for playing your part in where ballet begins. Here is how the generosity of our donors, with gifts large and small, helped us achieve some of our great moments in 2016:

Our year began as Marilyn Rowe House was officially opened by His Excellency, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) on January 30. Marilyn Rowe House is now fully operational; and home to our full-time students who have moved to Melbourne, and those who regularly travel to Melbourne as part of our Interstate/International Training Programme.

We held our inaugural Scholarship Awards in July. 165 young dancers converged in Melbourne, experiencing the opportunity to undertake masterclasses in Classical, Pointe, Male Coaching, Contemporary and Character before having the chance to perform their solo at the State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne.

We piloted new programmes (Early Learning, Children’s Ballet, Boys’ and Extension) which were all designed to connect, instil and further a passion for dance and music in young students. Taught by our Artistic staff and featuring live accompaniment in each class, students from the wider dance community have benefitted from the opportunity to access training at the School and these programmes will continue into the future.

Thanks to the ongoing and additional support of the Australian Government, the School has been able to fulfil a long-held dream – to perform at the Sydney Opera House on 4 December. Performing in Sydney will now be a vital and celebrated part of our annual calendar.

Our students have had opportunities to work with Australia’s very best choreographers as part of their training in 2016. Choreographers who worked with us and whose works were performed in 2016 included: Stephen Baynes’ A Singular Sequence, Stanton Welch AM’s A Time to Dance, Graeme Murphy AO’s Almost, Areti Boyaci’s Seguirilla, Simon Dow’s Divertissement, Christine Howard’s Défilé, Margaret Wilson’s Journey and Invisible Icon.

As the school of The Australian Ballet, we continue to be inextricably linked to our celebrated national ballet company; 9 out of 10 Principal Artists of The Australian Ballet are our graduates.

Despite our great successes, we must raise over 66% or two-thirds of our annual revenue from non-government sources; a third through tuition fees and a third through private philanthropy, corporate support and ticket sales. Your gift today, no matter the size, will help us continue to achieve our big dreams; honouring the past, achieving in the present and creating the future.
