Welcome to Sleepless in September 2015

Sleepless in September is STREAT's annual campaign that brings together people and organisations from across Melbourne to help stop youth homelessness.

This year's main event starts at 7 pm on Friday the 25th of September - again at Melbourne Central.

Here's a short time lapse video of last year.

Living without a home

The campaign isn’t just about raising critical funds for STREAT's youth programs. It's also about raising awareness and starting conversations around solutions to homelessness, it's about bringing the issue home.

Bringing the issue home

Throughout September people will be creating small Sleepless events within their homes, workplaces or schools. It’s as easy as starting a team with a few friends and perhaps arranging a simple meal and inviting people to join you, to support your fundraising, and to start some conversations about what 'having a home - or not having one' means to each of you.

How can you help?

It's easy to go Sleepless - and you don't have to create your own team or event.

You can just register as an individual and easily create your own page (here on this site) and raise funds with your friends, family and colleagues.

If you are keen to really help us stop youth homelessness then you can easily start your own team of supporters and even create your own Sleepless event.

And you don't have to actually sleep-out all night either. We call it going:

  • Zero Sleepless
  • A little Sleepless
  • Totally Sleepless

It's entirely your choice.

Step 1. Click Get Started to find out how to register or start a team.

Step 2. Click Get Involved for ideas on creating your own Sleepless event.

Go Sleepless at Melbourne Central

If you are in Melbourne you might like to join us at our big 'Sleepless at Melbourne Central' event from 7 pm on Friday the 25th of September. Click on Main Events for the details.

Here are some pics of where we'll be 'Sleeping' this year.

Where does the money go?

STREAT has helped over 400 young people since it started serving food from two small carts in Federation Square in early 2010. This year we will train and support over 150 disadvantaged local youth. All the proceeds from the Sleepless campaign will be used to assist STREAT in delivering its Youth Programs - which cost over $300,000 each year.

STREAT runs the campaign with the help of volunteers and interns from Universities and other organisations. A significant value of goods and services are also very generously donated by our wonderful partners and supporters. We thank you all.

Who else is going Sleepless?

This year we have hundreds of people doing all sorts of amazing things, including our major partners:

Many have a whole bunch of different internal teams collaborating and fundraising for Sleepless - and there’s often some healthy competition!

We’d love you to be part of it too!

What is STREAT?

STREAT is a social enterprise – an organisation with a business brain and a social heart.

We provide disadvantaged and homeless youth aged 16 to 25 with the life-skills development, work experience and hospitality training they require to start a career.

Our five Melbourne cafes, catering and coffee roasting businesses provide the venues (and 70% of the funds) needed to support and train these amazing young people.

The other 30% has to be made up from donations! That's why we are going Sleepless!

We are also a registered Australian charity with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status and all donations over $2 are tax deductible - and very gratefully received!

STREAT started operations in March 2010 with two small food carts in Federation Square and we've now helped over 400 young people.

STREAT has won national awards for its business and its coffee!

Our goal is to become fully self-sustaining by 2017 - and to be helping over 250 young people each year.

And we are happily going to lose lots more sleep to get there!

What's keeping us awake at night

Living without a home is a frightening daily reality for over 105,000 people in Australia.

More than 26,000 are young people aged from 12 to 24.

The majority leave school before Year 10 destined for long-term unemployment.

Their average life expectancy will be 47 years compared to 82 years for most people.

STREAT works with others – like you – to stop this.

How you can help stop youth homelessness

Above are five trainees from STREAT's first class in 2010. Two are now chefs in Melbourne, but all had been facing many of life's most difficult issues, including homelessness. We have now helped over 400 of these 'youngstars'.

Your support and fundraising efforts will help STREAT make a real difference to the lives of many more of these amazing young people.
