Founded in 1985, the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO NSW) is a non-government, not-for-profit community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law.

We provide expert legal advice and run court cases on behalf of our clients. Through our free legal workshops, seminars and legal guides, we help people understand how they can get involved in decisions that affect the environment.
For over 30 years, we have provided legal, scientific and policy advice, and run court cases for groups throughout Australia on a range of issues including: water pollution, coal seam gas and mining projects, inappropriate development, whaling and threatened species protection.

Last year EDO NSW provided free telephone advice to over 1,200 people and community groups across NSW, with 19 cases going to court.

EDO NSW also operates an Aboriginal Engagement Program, Scientific Advisory Service, Community Education and Professional Development Programs, and an International Program building the capacity of lawyers in the South Pacific. Our dynamic team of experts helps individuals and communities every day across Australia and the Pacific. They need us, and we need you!
